Most classical symphony musical performances require formal or semi-formal “concert” attire. When asked, Terry Jares (the first woman president of the Chicago Federation of Musicians) answers it with two questions: What would you wear if you were on the arm of a man in a tuxedo, and can you play your instrument in it? In the New Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the dress code for the men is tuxedo with black tie, which is not as formal as white tie and tails. This allows women the semi-formal option to wear pants (‘cellists especially!) and that all dresses or skirts be below the knee or floor length. To add to a more uniform look, the dress code also requests that the dresses and tops have sleeves.
